Puncak Niaga has been running water conservation projects in schools since 1998, beginning with its Briged Penyelamat Sungai. Over 6,000 schoolchildren have benefitted from the various educational programmes implemented over the last 10 years, enjoying especially the hands-on approach adopted. Puncak Niaga has even set up a team dedicated to manage its environment programmes, ensuring their success and long-term impact.
We believe protecting water resources is everybody’s duty.
Towards achieving sustainable development for the benefit of future generations of Malaysians and to continue enjoying our rich natural resources, Puncak Niaga’s corporate philosophy is that it is the duty and responsibility of every individual and corporation, including the PNHB Group, to protect and conserve the natural environment in our daily lives activities.
Environmental education initiatives
We believe that the younger generation is the key to the future well-being of our planet. As such, we endeavor to teach them about the protection and conservation of the environment through our education programmes. In order to make this real, we have trained a dedicated team to manage our environmental awareness programme. Over 6,000 students have benefited from the various educational programmes implemented over the last 11 years, enjoying especially the adopted hands-on approach. We found that this programme is still as popular as ever among the students. The aim of our programme is to raise the awareness among the people regarding the importance of water and water conservation. This is accomplished through a variety range of events and activities.
One of the programmes introduced to the students is the River Rescue Brigade (Briged Penyelamat Sungai) that was initiated in 1998. It remains the focal programme in which the students are taken on visits to Puncak Niaga’s Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) and dams. This programme aims to educate the younger generation about the importance of conserving our nation’s rivers. In 2008, a total of 3056 students from 115 schools participated in the River Rescue Brigade programme.
Our Educational Outreach Programme (Turun ke Padang) which was launched in 1999 is an extension of the River Rescue Brigade and it is aimed at educating young people on the vital consequences of river preservation to ensure the continuous supply of clean water. In 2007, the Senior Management of both Puncak Niaga and SYABAS visited 21 primary schools located within our areas of operation to deliver talks on the ways to care for our rivers and the environment, as well as the roles played by Puncak Niaga and SYABAS in the water treatment and water distribution processes respectively.
