Klinik Waqaf An-Nur

Waqaf is an Islamic system that stems from the idea of institutionalising voluntary giving in order to guarantee sustainability. It has strengthened and empowered Muslim communities since the early days of Islamic history. Inspired by the spirit of waqaf, KPJ Healthcare Berhad (KPJ), a group of hospitals and specialist medical centres in Malaysia and Indonesia, felt compelled to establish a network of charity clinics to make healthcare accessible to all Malaysians, irrespective of race or religion.

The first Klinik Waqaf An-Nur (KWAN) was set up in 1998 in Kotaraya, where patients earning less than RM800 a month are charged only RM5 for treatment and medication. This was followed by the opening of eight other KWAN clinics and dialysis centres nationwide. In 2006, the clinic in Pasir Gudang was upgraded into a 30-bed hospital, after seven years of operation, due to its high volume of patients. At the KWAN clinics, patients are treated by doctors and paramedics from KPJ hospitals who volunteer their services. The KPJ network includes the KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital, KPJ Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital, KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital, Tawakal Hospital and Sentosa Medical Centre.

Since their inception, KWAN clinics have treated more than 520,000 patients and, equipped with 52 dialysis machines, have provided life-saving treatment to more than 150 kidney patients. KPJ, which forms the healthcare arm of Johor Corporation (JCorp), is committed to further expanding its KWAN network by developing more clinics and upgrading existing ones. At present, two clinics are being built in Bukit Indah, Ampang; and Bandar Baru Semarian, Kuching while there are plans to open more clinics in Manjoi, Ipoh; Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur; Kajang, Selangor; as well as in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan.
