Best workplace practices — By csr on March 11, 2010 atTelekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) is committed to providing its 23,600 employees a workplace that fosters personal and professional development, while stressing on health and safety and also offering the opportunity to work flexi hours and to tele-work so as to strike a comfortable work-life balance.
Employee Training and Development
TM offers training programmes for its employees at five regional TM Training Colleges. Employees are required to undergo at least 40 hours of training a year, and in 2008 the company spent RM98.9 million training 40,548 staff from top management to non-executives. High achievers are further enrolled in a development programme that involves coaching, job rotation, special assignments and training. TM also provides scholarships to employees to further their studies both locally and internationally. In 2008, 73 staff took this opportunity to study at local and foreign universities.
Health and Wellness
Regular health talks and screenings are held for TM employees, while training is provided to those involved in hazardous occupations. In response to the spread of the A-H1N1 influenza, TM continuously provided information and updates on the disease and adopted various measures to keep employees safe from the virus. Staff who had the flu were given three days leave from work.
Sharing of Information
TM believes that two-way communication between management and employees is essential. The Group CEO himself engages with staff via monthly teh tarik sessions and quarterly financial briefings. In addition, print and electronic newsletters are produced and disseminated to keep everyone up to date with developments in the Group. Employees are encouraged to provide feedback and to channel any queries they have to the Group Corporate Communications department. TM also maintains cordial relations with its three in-house unions, with which it regularly discusses operational and industrial matters as well as updates on major business changes.
Work-Life Balance
Employees are given the option of working either from 8am-5pm; 8.30am-5.30pm or 9am-6pm. In addition, 140 employees from the Sales division are on a tele-working scheme which means they are not required to be in the office full-time. The main objective is to allow them to make more customer visits, hence improve the customer’s experience. Other benefits offered to employees that cater to their well-being include:
• a fully equipped gymnasium.
• childcare centres in Menara TM and at the Multimedia College Taiping.
• disability and health insurance for employees as well as medical care for their families.
• Tiaranita, a club for female employees and wives of TM employees, aimed at creating equal opportunities.
• an Employee Assistance Programme, through which employees facing personal or professional problems are given counseling.
