A simple switch

In 2007, Philips partnered with the Centre for Education, Training and Research in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CETREE) to drive home the need to manage energy to rural Malaysia. In 2008, that programme was extended, using the Philips CETREE Energy-Efficient Mobile Showroom to bring information and tips on energy conservation and alternative energy sources to primary school children across Peninsular Malaysia. The objective was to encourage them to make a simple switch to a more energy-efficient lifestyle.

From June to November 2008, the mobile showroom visited 20 primary schools in the Klang Valley, Penang, Pahang and Melaka, spreading relevant energy conservation information to more than 1,000 students. The mobile showroom consists of five knowledge kiosks:

  • General knowledge on renewable energy
  • Energy-efficient electrical equipment
  • Solar thermal
  • Solar electric
  • Biomass

These included specially designed games such as energy-focused ‘Monopoly’ and ‘Snakes & Ladders’. In addition, each student was encouraged to bring an incandescent light bulb from home to be exchanged for a Philips energy saving light bulb. They also wrote out energy saving resolutions which were placed on a dedicated ‘pledge wall’ at their schools. More than 800 pledges were made.

Philips research shows that if every household in Malaysia replaced 60W incandescent lamps with three 11W CFLs, this would lead to energy savings of close to 1.5 billion kWhrs, or RM400 million, per year.

The Prime Minister’s CSR Awards, launched by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development in 2007, aims to recognise companies that have made a difference to the communities in which they operate through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes.
