KUALA LUMPUR: The private sector should include the social welfare of its employees and surrounding community in its plans if its wants to be profitable in the long run, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“How a company values its corporate social responsibility department and projects will reflect its world view and corporate culture,” he said when presenting the Prime Minister’s CSR Awards 2010 here yesterday.

He said corporate social responsibility (CSR) should not be perceived as a one-way traffic system with the company as the giver and the community as the receiver.

“The award does not just benefit relevant companies but also the community.

“It serves both as an example and inspiration for other companies to follow in their footsteps and help transform our nation’s life.”

The awards were awarded by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to companies that had made a conscientious and strategic effort to positively influence communities.

For their CSR initiatives, The Sunway Group received the award in the field of Education, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Environment), CIMB Group (Culture and Heritage, and Community and Social Welfare), Saito College Sdn Bhd (Small Company CSR), L’Oreal Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Empowerment of Women) and Telekom Malaysia (Workplace Practices), with Media Prima Berhad receiving the Media Coverage Special Award.

The Sunway Group was also the overall winner and for this received the Prime Minister’s CSR Award.

Muhyiddin said many companies were trying to come up with a suitable project as CSR was a “new” area in the country.

“As companies battle it out in the spirit of healthy competition, they will be compelled to come up with better and more creative projects.”

A total of 137 submissions were received for the awards. Judging was carried out by a panel chaired by Women, Family and Community Development Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Policy) Datuk Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur.

All projects were evaluated on five criteria: impact on the community, sustainability, how well the projects were documented, involvement of management and employees and the projects’ national significance.
