Klinik Waqaf An-Nur
Waqaf is an Islamic system that stems from the idea of institutionalising voluntary giving in order to guarantee sustainability. It has strengthened and empowered Muslim communities since the early days of Islamic history. Inspired by the spirit of waqaf, KPJ Healthcare Berhad (KPJ), a group of hospitals and specialist medical centres in Malaysia and Indonesia, felt compelled to establish a network of charity clinics to make healthcare accessible to all Malaysians, irrespective of race or religion.
The first Klinik Waqaf An-Nur (KWAN) was set up in 1998 in Kotaraya, where patients earning less than RM800 a month are charged only RM5 for treatment and medication. This was followed by the opening of eight other KWAN clinics and dialysis centres nationwide.
2009 Honouree: Mulpha International and the Art of Health

The idea was to provide a creative and engaging outlet to children who are terminally ill, so as to get their minds off their pain and perhaps also to release some positive energy. Overriding this was also the objective of forming a closer relationship with the children and their families and to be able to offer them emotional support without being intrusive.
The concept had been successfully carried out in the UK, where there is a strong belief that patients gain healing benefits from self-expression via drawing, writing, dancing and other forms of creativity. [Read more...]
